Job Requirements/Description

Full Time, Fixed Term for 36 months

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and analytical individual to join Bristol City Council as a Health and Care Intelligence Specialist Apprentice. While line managed by the Principal Public Health Intelligence Specialist, the post holder will be working within and contributing to the wider Public Health Team. Based in our supportive and expert Population Health team, you will complete a Level 7 apprenticeship while contributing to health intelligence work that directly impacts public health outcomes across Bristol.

Over the 36-month programme, you’ll gain hands-on experience with real-world data and policy, while developing skills that will prepare you for a specialist career in public health analysis, epidemiology, or healthcare intelligence.

What will I be doing?

You’ll work within Bristol City Council’s Public Health Team, supporting the development of intelligence and data that informs local decision-making across the health and care system

As an apprentice, you will develop skills to:

  • Analyse and interpret complex health, care and population data.
  • Communicate evidence clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Support development of the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA).
  • Use tools like Excel, R and Power BI to support your analysis.
  • Collaborate with internal teams in the council, NHS partners, academics, and the voluntary sector.

You will also complete a Level 7 Health and Care Intelligence Specialist apprenticeship, delivered by JGA Group: Health and care intelligence specialist / Skills England with 20% of your time allocated to structured off-the-job training. You will be supported by a workplace mentor and regular coaching to help you succeed.

What do I need to have?

Important: This is a highly specialist apprenticeship. Please ensure you read our Apprenticeship Application FAQs, Eligibility Guidance and Programme Overview before applying

To be eligible, you must:

  • Hold GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C/4 or above (or Functional Skills Level 2).
  • Have the right to work in England and not be in full-time education or another apprenticeship.
  • Meet one of the following entry routes: A STEM degree; A Social Science degree (e.g. Psychology, Geography, Economics) with statistics modules and a dissertation involving data analysis; A Level 4+ qualification in a STEM field with substantial mathematical content; FEDIP registration via AphA at Practitioner or Senior Practitioner level; Equivalent analytical work experience

If you already hold a Level 7 qualification (or higher) in a subject that significantly overlaps with the apprenticeship content, you may be ineligible. This includes most PhDs, Medical Degrees, and MSc-level qualifications in Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, or similar fields.

However, we will consider each application individually. Eligibility will depend on the content of your previous studies, your work experience, and the amount of new learning the apprenticeship will offer you. Applicants with post-bachelor qualifications in Health and Care Analysis will normally be excluded.
