Job Advert Description

Would you like a career like no other? If so… Join Us

South Wales Police brings together thousands of people with the same aim – to keep South Wales safe.

We want to be the best at understanding and responding to our community’s needs. To do this we need the very best candidates from a wide range of backgrounds to apply to become part of our policing family.

We are looking for someone to #JoinUs as a Designing out crime officer in our Communities and Partnerships department. Could you be who we are looking for?

About the team/Department you will be joining:
The Designing Out Crime Team is a small team of specialist officers based within the wider Communities and Partnerships Department at South Wales Police Headquarters, Bridgend. Working closely with colleagues across Neighbourhood Policing, local authorities, developers and partner agencies, the team plays a vital role in helping create safer communities across the force area.

Our focus is to strengthen and support neighbourhood policing by understanding modern policing demands and responding proactively through the early identification of risks, effective intervention, crime prevention and collaborative problem-solving. Through partnership working, we aim to reduce opportunities for crime and anti-social behaviour before they occur.

As a Designing Out Crime Officer (DOCO), you will provide expert crime prevention and security design advice across the South Wales Police force area, with a particular focus on Cardiff's rapidly developing urban environment. By influencing the design of new developments, regeneration projects and public spaces, you will help ensure that safety is embedded from the outset, contributing directly to the long-term reduction of crime, fear of crime and vulnerability within our communities.

About the role and your key responsibilities:
As a Designing Out Crime Officer, you will work with developers, architects, planners, local authorities, and community partners to ensure that crime prevention is considered from the earliest stages of development.

Using the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and the Secured by Design initiative, you will provide expert advice on planning applications, regeneration projects, and public space developments. Your work will directly contribute to reducing crime, improving public confidence, and creating environments where people feel safe.

No two days are the same. One day you could be advising on a major housing development, the next conducting site visits, presenting to stakeholders, or supporting community safety initiatives.

What skills and experience do we need you to bring to the role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive individual who can combine technical expertise with strong interpersonal and influencing skills.

You will have:
Experience in crime prevention, community safety, planning, security, architecture, policing, or a related field.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
The ability to analyse problems and develop practical solutions.
Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
Confidence in presenting information and challenging decisions constructively where necessary.
Knowledge of Secured by Design principles or a willingness to undertake relevant training.

The successful Candidate must be willing to undergo vetting to MV/SC Vetting.

Please note, if you are an internal candidate and subject to an ongoing PSD investigation, your appointment or placement in the role may be delayed pending an outcome. Whether the role is held open will be considered on a case-by-case basis

As an equal opportunities’ employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons. However, as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates are currently underrepresented within the Force, we would particularly welcome applications from ethnically diverse candidates.

To support the ambition of a diverse workforce, South Wales Place is able to offer a Guaranteed Interview Scheme (GIS). The GIS is available for people living with a disability or identify as ethnically diverse.

If you are an applicant who is living with a disability or from an ethnically diverse background (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) and would like to be considered under the GIS, you must meet the essential minimum criteria for the role as outlined in the advert and role profile. You should take time to evidence that you meet each of the essential criteria in your application form and/or personal statement and CV.

There are numerous benefits to working for South Wales Police, from learning and development opportunities to schemes which aim to improve your lifestyle and wellbeing, as well as generous Local Government Pension Scheme / Police Pension Schemes, paid annual leave, flexible working and family friendly policies and many more.

If you would like any more information about the role, please contact katryna.malinowski-evans@south-wales.police.uk
