Job Requirements/Description

Desktop Support Engineer – Level 1

Location: Yeovil, Somerset,
Salary: £30,000–£32,000 per annum, dependent on experience
Environment: Secure Aerospace Engineering & Manufacturing Facility
Experience: 1–3 years' IT support experience

Build your IT career in an environment where technology really matters

If you have a strong foundation in desktop support and want your next role to offer more than a conventional office IT environment, this is an opportunity to develop your experience within a highly secure aerospace engineering and manufacturing facility.

Working onsite as part of ESP Global Services, you'll provide hands-on IT support to users operating in a complex, security-controlled technical environment. You'll gain exposure to enterprise infrastructure, networking hardware and tightly governed IT processes while developing your skills alongside experienced technical teams.

It's an excellent next step for an early-career IT professional who enjoys solving problems, working directly with users and wants to build broader infrastructure support experience.

What you'll be doing

As a Level 1 Desktop Support Engineer, you'll be one of the first points of technical support onsite, diagnosing and resolving day-to-day hardware, software, operating system and connectivity issues.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Installing, supporting and troubleshooting desktops, laptops, monitors, printers and other IT peripherals.
  • Providing hands-on PC break/fix and deskside support to end users.
  • Supporting Windows operating systems and desktop applications.
  • Resolving basic LAN, Wi-Fi, VPN and connectivity issues.
  • Supporting routine Active Directory activities including password resets, account unlocks and existing group membership.
  • Assisting with Microsoft Office, antivirus and company-specific application deployments.
  • Providing basic support for iOS and Android devices.
  • Performing Smart Hands activities on networking and infrastructure equipment such as routers, switches, firewalls, racks and cabinets under the direction of senior or remote technical teams.
  • Managing incidents and service requests through the ticketing system and working to agreed service levels.
  • Escalating more complex infrastructure, network and security issues to Level 2 and specialist teams.

What we're looking for

You'll ideally have 1–3 years' experience in IT infrastructure, desktop, deskside or end-user support, together with a practical understanding of:

  • Windows desktop environments and PC hardware.
  • Hardware installation, diagnostics and troubleshooting.
  • TCP/IP, DNS and DHCP fundamentals.
  • VPN, RDP and basic network connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Active Directory and basic identity administration.
  • Enterprise ticketing and incident management processes.

CompTIA A+ or an equivalent entry-level IT qualification would be advantageous, although we are equally interested in relevant hands-on experience. An understanding of ITIL principles would also be beneficial.

You'll need strong communication and customer-service skills, good troubleshooting instincts and the confidence to work independently while knowing when an issue requires escalation.

The role also involves the physical installation and movement of IT equipment, so you must be comfortable undertaking the normal manual-handling requirements associated with desktop and infrastructure support.

Why this opportunity is different

This isn't simply another desktop support position.

You'll be supporting technology within a secure aerospace engineering and manufacturing environment, giving you experience of the standards, controls and disciplines associated with supporting IT in a security-sensitive operation.

For someone developing their IT career, that means the opportunity to build experience across desktop support, enterprise infrastructure, networking, Smart Hands support and controlled IT operations — providing a strong foundation for progression into more senior infrastructure and technical support roles.

Security & nationality requirement

This role is based within a security-controlled aerospace engineering and manufacturing facility and is subject to mandatory customer security and pre-employment screening requirements.

Due to the specific security and DBS onboarding requirements stipulated for access to this customer environment, applicants must be able to satisfy all required security and background screening checks.

This requirement relates specifically to the security and access conditions applicable to the customer site and the duties of this position.
